The Palmavera complex is located on the promontory of the same name, one and a half kilometre from the sea, within the Porto Conte Park, in the province of Alghero. Built with blocks of limestone and sand, consisting of a central body with two towers and a bulwark, plus the huts of a village: today there are less than 50, but experts estimate that number to have ranged between 150 and 200 when the village was inhabited. The village was built in several phases. The first phase (15th-14th centuries BC) included the main tower, eight metres high and with a diameter of ten metres, inside which there is a large central chamber with beehive roofs. A flight of stairs led to the upper level and a terrace. Later (9th century BC), another tower was added, connected to the first by means of a patio and a corridor. The large meeting hut was built in the same period. Inside it stands the chief’s round seat. Among the various decoration items found in the dwelling there was a small model of Nuraghe, a pre-historical art item typical of other Sardinian complexes (as many as 16 were found at Mont’e Prama).Description from the site www.sardegnaturismo.itQuintilio Bar e Ristorante (1.8 km) Our local. The nave and the two aisles are however in Late Renaissance style. The main altar was designed by the Genovese artist Giuseppe Massetti (1727): the sculpture shows Mary the Immaculate flanked by angels. He also designed the ambulatory and the pulpit. In 1862 a Neo-Classical narthex was added to the façade, which dramatically changed its appearance.Museo del Corallo Alghero (3km) The Coral Museum, housed in an elegant Art Nouveau Villa, was created to recount the tale of Alghero’s identity and of the strong bond that has always united the city and coral.A fascinating journey to discover the red gold of the Mediterranean Sea: Corallium Rubrum, one of the main resources, as well as an emblem of identity to which the Fortified City owes part of its fame and fortune.Chiesa di San Michele (4km) The church of San Michele is an important Catholic place of worship in the city of Alghero , which represents one of the most significant examples in Sardinia of the Baroque style . The beautiful and deep bay of Porto Ferro is the northern limit of the Riviera del Corallo , a coastal enclave of Sassari , twenty kilometers from Alghero . Inside it 'protects' one of the widest beaches of the impervious Nurra coast , as well as chosen among the most beautiful in Sardinia by the Touring Club Italia , and more 'sustainable' by the FEE ( Foundation for Environmental Education), awarded the Blue Flag in the three-year period 2016-18.Grotte di Nettuno (28km) This is a place you should visit at least once in your life: the only way to truly admire the beauty of this place and perceive its charm is in person. Neptune’s grotto is one of the largest marine caves in Italy and one of the most captivating gems of nature in the Mediterranean. The grotto was formed about two million years ago: inside, you will see rooms with astounding karst formations, a white sandy beach and a huge underground lake. The Coves de Neptú (in Catalan language) was discovered by a fisherman in the 18th century and soon became a tourist attraction. It extends horizontally for about four kilometres on the same level as the surface of the sea. Neptune’s grotto is located 24 km from Alghero and is the pride and joy of the marine protected area of Capo Caccia-Isola Piana, inside the Porto Conte Park. You will reach the entrance by going down the Escala del cabirol, ‘Roe deer’s steps’ (in Catalan language): 654 steps clinging onto the western ridge of the promontory of Capo Caccia as far as the mouth. Otherwise, you can get there in greater comfort by sea, on the boats that depart daily from the tourist port of the Catalan town or from the pier of Cala Dragunara in Porto Conte, allowing you to enjoy the spectacular sight of the cliffs overlooking the sea. Along the way, you will be thrilled by the countless wonderful views of the Riviera del Corallo. The tourist route through the caves extends for about one kilometre. The entrance is a passage covered by concretions of vegetation and dense with stalactites and stalagmites. A line of columns nine metres high will take you to the crystal clear salty waters of Lake La Marmora, one hundred metres long at the maximum point and nine metres deep. From here, you will begin to see a lovely sandy beach, once completely covered in pebbles. Standing in the centre, there is a holy water font, a monumental stalagmite on top of which there are little basins that act as a source of drinking water for birds nesting nearby. On the bottom of the lake, a distinctive stalagmite formation called the ‘Christmas tree’ stands out between large flowstones and calcitic festoons. A short, slightly downhill path takes you to the Room of the ruins and then to the majestic Palace room, revealing the most evocative scenario: an 18-metre tall column rises up to the vault and forms two spectacular arches, which look like they’re holding up the ceiling. Next, there is the Smith room (or the Organ room), dedicated to an English captain, who was one of its earliest explorers (19th century). In the centre of the room, you will see the great organ, the largest column in the entire grotto with rockflows resembling organ pipes. Following on is the Lace room, adorned with small columns. The tour ends with a visit to the Music stand, a balcony overlooking the ‘palace’, the lake and the beach. In addition to welcoming an average of 150,000 visitors each year, the caves are visited by numerous speleologists, the only ones able to enter the deepest and most secret ravines reserved to expert speleologists, namely the Lake of mushrooms and, through the underground tunnel, to the huge room hosting the Crescent lake, which is 70 metres long and 50 metres deep. The caves were used as a film set: in 1978, ‘Island of the Fishmen’ was filmed there, with scenes that remind you of stories by Jules Verne.https://www.sardegnaturismo.it/en/explore/neptunes-grotto-grotta-di-nettunoNecropoli di Anghelu Ruju (12 km) This is the largest necropolis of pre-Nuragic Sardinia. The necropolis was discovered accidentally in 1903 during the excavations for the construction of a farmhouse, in the winery of Sella&Mosca.Domus de Janas S'Incantu - Putifigari (15 km) The burial ground is made up of four domus de janas obtained from an outcrop of tufaceous rock located at the foot of the mountain from which the necropolis takes its name. Among these stands out the one known as the "tomb of painted architecture" or " de s'incantu" (of enchantment) - one of the most spectacular in Sardinia - in which the quality of the decorations present show the high artistic level achieved during the Neolithic from Sardinian hypogean art.The domus , whose entrance is preceded by a long corridor, the dromos , has a T-shaped planimetric section: it is formed by a small quadrangular anteroom which, through a door, leads into a large rectangular room; here, in the side walls there are two small cells. The most interesting part, the central compartment, measures 5.90 x 3.30 m and 2.20 m in height. Two square section pillars "support" the ceiling, the latter artistically represented as a double sloping roof made up of cross beams and beams - in which the original red and black painting can still be distinguished - imitating the ceilings of contemporary houses. The front wall is decorated with a false door with a double recessed frame , above which three long bull protomes are carved , symbolizing the god Taurus or fertility, which run along the entire length. Opposite, on the floor, stands a cuphemispherical, circumscribed by four concentric circles - the outer one with a diameter of about one meter - perhaps suitable for containing offerings to the dead. On the sides of the room two doors equipped with triple recessed frames lead to as many cells, without decorations, where the bodies of the dead were presumably placed. In the rocky outcrop outside the domus , several cupels and tubs are obtained, as well as a series of channels that prevented the flooding of the tomb by rainwater.
